Things You'll Need:

Planting A Container For An Entryway

  1. Step 1

Chose the entryway that needs some attention, and containers for the plants. If the containers are not to your liking, choose plants that will trail over the sides and the containers will soon disappear. Make sure there are drain holes in the base.

  2. Step 2

Gather all of the tools you will need for planting the containers.

  3. Step 3

Place some large rocks in the base of the container for proper drainage. No one will ever see these rocks.

  4. Step 4

Fill container to about 2-3 inches from the top with with a rich plant starter soil mix.

  5. Step 5

Decide where you want the flowers inside of the container while they are still in the trays.

  6. Step 6

Tear down the side of the potting tray and pull out one section at a time. Tear apart the roots that have grown to other plants as cleanly as possible.

  7. Step 7

Make a hole with two fingers, rocking back and forth to enlarge the hole. Put a plant in the hole, even with the dirt level and back scoop the dirt.

  8. Step 8

Plant tall plants in the center, with smaller accents or trailers around the edges. The container may look sparse at first, but the plants will all fill out later.

  9. Step 9

Place container at entryway for a dramatic spring look.

Tips & Warnings
  • When planting two containers for entryways, it may be easier to duplicate the planting pattern in both containers.
  • Let children help choose and plant flowers to instill a love of gardening and teach container gardening.
  • Choose annuals that need the same amount of sunlight for even blooming throughout the container.
  • Take into account the amount of sunlight the entryway will receive when choosing plants.
