How to Organize Home Office File Drawers

  1. Step 1

Take blank file folders and, using your black marker, label them to represent different categories.

  2. Step 2

Sort through your current papers and materials and put them into the appropriately labeled file folders.

  3. Step 3

Divide your files into two categories. The first category will be "Home," and should include items such as bills, car and health insurance and home-budget materials. The second category will be "Office," and will include everything related to work.

  4. Step 4

Take your two separate stacks of file folders and put the categories into alphabetical order. This will make it easy to find what you are looking for. Place your home file folders in one file drawer, and your work folders in a separate file drawer.

  5. Step 5

File all new materials and return used materials immediately after use, so your work area will remain neat and organized.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is a good idea to keep extra file folders on hand so that you can easily create new categories as needed.
