After you've made the decision to become Wiccan, choosing a Wiccan name is not something that should be made lightly. Becoming Wiccan and choosing a new name is a symbolic rebirth, and should be taken no less seriously than naming a new baby. But what should you consider when you're choosing your new name? We're going to take a look at just that.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sense of self
  • Pen
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

Think about what kind of person you are and what kind of person you would like to develop into. Write down some of the personality traits that you come up with.

  2. Step 2

Many Wiccans find their inspiration for their name coming from nature. Think of any animals that you might hold a special connection with, whose traits you admire and wish to emulate.

  3. Step 3

Decide what combination of these characteristics you would like to embrace in your Wiccan name. Sometimes the most powerful names are created by combining two of these traits into one name. This is also where your baby name book comes in. They can be very handy, as they give the meanings and origins of a good number of names.

  4. Step 4

    Select your name!

  5. Step 5

There is also a private name, that a witch should not share with outsiders and only use in communication between herself and the Divine. Many witches receive this name directly from the Divine. If you wish to be named by the Divine, simply ask. Clear your mind of all negativity and bad thoughts, and ask. Be aware that sometimes the name can come to you in the form of a dream.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some find it helpful to use numerology to help them narrow down the search for the name that is truly them, matching the values of their Wiccan name and their birthday.
  • Don't completely abandon the name your parents bestowed on you. Not only is it a link to the non-Wiccan world, but it is a connection to your family, your parents and your heritage.
  • Be careful of when and where you use your Wiccan name. Don't just use it because it sounds better than your birthname, or just to get attention. Those are the wrong reasons.
