Kayaking is a sport that requires strength, finesse and teamwork. Kayaking is an interesting and unique sport, great for socializing and exercise. There are also many kayaking races that test a kayaker's skill and award points which can be traded for different benefits. Read on to learn how to participate in kayak racing.

  1. Step 1

    Join a kayaking organization. Many states have organizations that will give you tips on kayaking and allow you to socialize with others who have a passion for the paddle. An example of a kayaking organization is the New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association.

  2. Step 2

    Learn the rules of your kayaking organization. There are often rules involving the kayak specifics, the awarding of points and raffles, and age grouping.

  3. Step 3

    Figure out your age group. The New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association allows solo kayak racers to race as a man younger that 50, man older than 50, woman younger than 50, or woman older than 50.

  4. Step 4

    Find the organization's calender. Find out if you are qualified to race.

  5. Step 5

    Contact the race organizer. Oftentimes there is more than one organizer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a kayaking class or research kayaking tips before participating in a kayaking race.
  • Do not participate in kayaking without a physician's approval.
