Using fabric odds and ends, a little imagination and some polyfill stuffing, you can come up with this fun little pillow in an afternoon.The butterfly applique was drawn freehand, but you can also use a stencil to trace the shape onto fabric.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 pieces of fabric, about 15 by 20 inches, for front and back of pillow
  • 1 6 by 8-inch piece of contrasting color fabric, for applique
  • 2 6-inch pieces of bias trim tape, for antenna
  • 1 10-inch piece of eyelash yarn trim, for head
  • Polyfill stuffing
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

    How to Make a Butterfly Patchwork Pillow

  1. Step 1

    On work surface, place applique fabric, right side down. Trace or draw freehand a butterfly shape (as pictured). Cut out with scissors. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

    Position applique onto right side of fabric you've chosen for the front of the pillow. Pin into place. Machine or hand stitch around edges of applique.

  3. Step 3

    Pin the two 6-inch pieces of bias tape into place above applique, for antenna, as shown in picture. Machine or hand stitch into place.

  4. Step 4

    Now, join right sides of front and back fabric pieces together and machine or hand stitch a straight seam around three sides.Turn pillow inside out.

    Wind eyelash yarn into a ball, and tie a knot in center. Hand or machine stitch the yarn into place for butterfly head.

  6. Step 6

    Stuff inside of pillow loosely with polyfill.Finish by hand or machine stitching the top closed, as pictured.

Tips & Warnings
  • Polyfill stuffing is available at Michael's and discount retailers like WalMart for about $3 a bag. One bag will stuff about four pillows in the size pictured.
