Flat irons range in price from around $20 to over $300. For all the variation in price there is equal variation in quality, but there are also some great deals available.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of flat iron you need. Is flat ironing your hair a major, or even essential, part of your hair care routine? If you are looking for an iron you will use daily or even a few times a week, plan to spend at least $80. The more expensive models tend to heat quicker and heat to a higher temperature, so you will not need to keep the iron in contact with your hair for long periods of time. This will minimize damage, even if you are ironing frequently. If you are looking for an iron you will use only once a week, you can pick up a cheaper model available in a drug store or discount retailer.

  2. Step 2

Compare models and features. Whether you are shopping online or at real stores, look at the different sizes of irons to decide what you need. If you are looking to straighten hair quickly but not striving for "perfectly staright" hair, you can buy a bigger model that will cover more ground in a short period of time. Good irons often use tourmaline or ceramic technology and have adjustable heat levels, so keep an eye out for these features as well.

  3. Step 3

Read reviews. If you are shopping online, go to a website that sells beauty products and tools and read reviews of some of the most popular flat irons. Select a model that got positive reviews or several stars in its rating.

  4. Step 4

Shop around for the best price. Once you have selected the right flat iron for you, don't hurry to buy. Write down the brand name and model number and take some time to compare prices. Great deals on flat irons can be found on eBay and the online beauty retailers. The discount drug store chains like Harmon also feature some great deals.

  5. Step 5

Try your iron and save the packaging materials. Be sure to remove your flat iron from its packaging very carefully even though you may be excited to try it! Save your receipt, the box, instructions, and warranty information for at least a month or two. You will not be able to return the iron if it breaks or malfunctions if you do not have all this information.
