Every little girl wants to be a princess, so what better way to make your daughter feel like one than to give her a princess-themed bedroom of her own? Despite what many of the home-decorating shows might tell you, you can decorate a child's room and still stay within your budget. Here are some tips on how to create a princess-themed bedroom for your little girl, and not spend a fortune in the process.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint
  • Fabric samples
  • Glitter
  • Metallic paint markers
  1. Step 1

Paint the walls a rich, royal color. Purple, burgundy, green or other deep colors are perfect. Use cardboard or plastic to make stencils of crowns, wands, or castles. Use contrasting colors of paint with these to create a border, either at the ceiling line or at just above the horizontal center of the wall. If you're really ambitious or creative, think about painting a castle scene on one wall, or adding your child's name in a scrolling, royal script. Use a gold metallic paint marker for accents, or for clever quotations around the room.

  2. Step 2

Remember that princesses love their beds to be fancy. If you don't have a four-poster bed for your princess, you can make an over-the-bed canopy very easily. Get some rubber tubing and bend it into a circle about two feet across. Using upholsterer's cording, hang the circle from a hook placed in the ceiling. Next, take several yards of sheer material and drape it around the circle, up one side and down the other, so that it hangs down to the bed. Attach the ends of the sheer fabric to the headboard or wall so your princess doesn’t get tangled up in her canopy while she's sleeping.

  3. Step 3

Use fabric make the room's accents fit for a princess. Get a pair of lace sheers for each window, and make or buy long, elegant curtains to put over them. For tiebacks, use a strand of gold beads, which you can find easily in any craft store. It can be expensive to buy curtains, but if you're handy with a sewing machine, it's worth it to just drop a few dollars on a couple of yards of fabric and make your own. Attach silver or gold finials to the curtain rod for a royal treatment.

  4. Step 4

Use scraps of velvet, satin or velour to create a lush, colorful bedspread. Find some lace tablecloths (you can usually get these really cheap at the thrift store) and tuck them under the mattress to make a faux bed skirt. Add some fat throw pillows made out of your leftover fabric after you've made the bedspread. Tassels and gold buttons add extra effect.

  5. Step 5

Finally, add storage for all your princess's royal toys and clothing. Paint a dresser or other storage unit a light color, but then add gold or silver accents. Many home improvement stores feature cabinet hardware with a princess theme, such as crowns or wands. Get clear glitter paint, and add it to the faces of the storage units. Don't forget one of the most important parts of being a princess--a full-length mirror. Find one at a discount store, and use your gold paint marker to write "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest one of all?" on the glass. Near the mirror, put hooks up so your princess can hang her boas and tiara up at the end of her busy day.

Tips & Warnings
  • Create custom artwork by enlarging photos of your child in her princess ensemble, and then frame them to hang on the walls.
  • Remember that you don't want to re-decorate the room again in two years. Use a color scheme that will allow your child to grow up, but not outgrow it.
