Lawn dusters are excellent tools for dispensing anything from pesticides to fungicides to fertilizer. As effective as they can be, a mere gust of wind can ruin all your hard work. Here are some steps you can take to minimize the effects of drift when you are using a lawn duster.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lawn duster
  • Dust for dispensing
  • Face mask
  • Gloves
  • Protective clothing (ie. Coveralls)
  1. Step 1

Before you use a lawn duster, check for wind. You can watch the weather report, or check out the Weather Channel online. You can find the average wind speed for your area. This is only an average, but it may help you decide whether or not the conditions are right for lawn duster usage. Wind is your greatest enemy.

  2. Step 2

If you have no other choice but to use your duster on a windy day, try to wait for lulls in the wind to dispense the dust.

  3. Step 3

Aim your duster as closely to the ground (or your intended target) as possible.

  4. Step 4

Use a larger or more coarse grain of dust. Larger, heavier grains are more likely to fall to the ground.

  5. Step 5

Map your route of dusting and try to aim your duster so that any drifted dust blows onto an area that doesn't have any.

  6. Step 6

Keep your back to the wind to avoid the dust being blown directly back into the duster nozzle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use protective gear when dispensing chemicals.
