1
Write a professional resume. Because many of the government job openings in Japan have hundreds of applicants, it may be wise to hire a professional resume writer to assist you in creating the best resume possible. You might also consider hiring someone who has experience in writing KSAs (knowledge, skills and abilities statements). KSAs are a large part of the government application process, and mastery of the KSAs will put you a step ahead of the competition. There are also many books for sale that explain how to properly write resumes and KSAs for government jobs.

2
Log onto the premier government job website, USA Jobs (see Resources for the link). Create your profile and upload your resume and contact information to the application system. Be careful to proofread your resume before uploading it, since errors will jeopardize your chances at landing a government job in Japan.

3
Start searching for jobs. To do this, simply return to the homepage, go to "Location Search" and scroll down until you see the location fields for Japan. Location fields for Japan include Japan; Okinawa, Japan; and Yokusoka, Japan. Click on one of these at a time, or select all of them by holding down the Ctrl button on your keyboard and selecting them all.

Take note of the fact that many government agencies use software that first scans resumes for keywords and key phrases before forwarding any resumes to a human resources professional. By tailoring your resume to each job announcement with keywords and phrases from the job announcement, you will increase your odds that your resume will eventually make it into human hands, which is half the battle in applying for government jobs.
