  1. Your Plans

    • 1

First of all, you want to be sure that you are planning the right type of iguana cage. Research iguanas and make sure that you understand what types of homes they need. For a single iguana, a cage that is 6' tall, 4' wide and 3' deep is a good size, But if you want to make a bigger one, your iguana certainly won't mind!

    • 2

Next, you need to decide what materials you are going to use. Some great materials include wood, metal and PVC piping (for the supports). Glass and wire are often used for the sides, tops and bottoms of cages. You will need metal hinges to connect the supports to the sides, and you will also need things like glue, caulking and/or tape.

Be sure that you have a piece of paper big enough to create the plans. You'll want to draw them to scale so you can build the cage easily. Use your ruler to make a scale. Remember that you don't need to draw the plans perfectly, because you will be the only person who needs to understand them. If you can't draw very well, you can always make notes to remind yourself of what you are drawing. Your iguana habitat can be all up to your imagination!

Once you have the plans drawn, you should plan for the materials to be used in the iguana cage. This is a very important part of planning your cage. You already know what the supports, sides, top and bottom will be made out of, but be sure that you include in your plans what materials you'll have on the inside -- such as rocks, sand or gravel. Check with the pet store and see what types of materials are best for the iguana you hope to purchase.

Finally, remember that your iguana will need a bowl for water and another one for food. You might also want to include a log for him to hide under or climb on, or some plants for him to enjoy. Don't forget to include plans for his heat lamp, as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Having the perfect home ready and waiting will make your new Iguana happier!

  • Be sure that the plans you draw up allow the cage to be maintained at the right temperature

  • Don't use any materials in your cage that might be hazardous to your new pet!
