A great way to vary your form in your practice with the Bo Staff is to bring yourself low. When you’re low to the ground, you can execute the same movements used on your feet. Yet, this will a little variation. You can even include rolls and kicks if you so desire.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bo Staff

Step1
Kneel down on your right knee, keeping the left leg bent with your lower leg perpendicular to the ground.
Step2
Hold the Bo Staff in front of you with an underhand left grip and an overhand right grip, angling the left tip toward the sky.
Step3
Execute a strike movement by slicing the left tip down. Push it out in front of you.
Step4
Move into a stab by pulling the Bo Staff toward you, and thrust it forward.
Step5
Incorporate a roll by laying the Bo Staff lengthwise on the ground in front of you, maintaining your grip on the staff. Tuck your chin into your chest and roll forward, bringing your Bo Staff with you into the roll. It’s basically a somersault, but you’ll land in the same stance you were in before executing the roll.
Step6
Quickly move into a kick by bringing the Bo Staff to the ground on your right side. At the same time, pivot on your right knee so your left hip is pointing toward your opponent. Using your hands as support, press them into the ground as you kick up and out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you have enough room around you to roll, kick and swing the Bo Staff for this sequence.
  • Don't attempt to do this without proper supervision.
