- Freshwater aquarium with plants, rocks, and caves

- Food: algae or algae-based food with vegetables (such as boiled peas, pumpkin, and zucchini), mosquito larvae, fruit flies, or fish fillets

Step 1
Make sure your rainbow fish will have plenty of room to swim around in your aquarium. Your aquarium should be set up with the proper equipment, like a filter and air pump, plants, rocks and clean water. Once you have your aquarium ready, you can add your rainbow fish.

Feed your rainbow fish two to three small amounts of found each day. It should take your pet no more than three to five minutes to eat its food. To have a healthy rainbow fish, give it food that is as close to its natural diet as possible. This would include algae or algae-based food with vegetables like boiled peas, pumpkin and zucchini. About 40 percent of your fish's diet should include protein, such as mosquito larvae, fruit flies or fish filets.

Keep your water temperature between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Check water temperature daily.

Check your filter and other equipment each day. Test the water quality at least once a week. The pH level of your water is important: In most freshwater aquariums, it should fall between 6.5 and 7.5. Many pet stores can help with testing and information on water quality. Don't be afraid to ask for help with this critical issue for taking care of your rainbow fish.

Change 25 percent of the total volume of your water every two to four weeks to take proper care or your fish.
