Stopping unwanted pests is sometimes the hardest thing to do. With a few simple steps, unwanted pests will stop visiting any home. Keep moths away from clothes and kill those cockroaches dead in their tracks without using chemicals or poisons. Stop the invasion of flies and ants that plague homes every summer. Everyone can use a few helpful tips for keeping unwanted pests from taking up residence in their homes.

  1. Step 1

    Use red pepper or salt sprinkled by doorways and windowsills to keep ants from getting in the house. The ants will not cross the line.

  2. Step 2

    Use a water and vinegar solution saturated on a rag to wipe down counter tops and tables. Flies will stay away. To prevent flies from entering the house use mint on the windowsills or anywhere flies may come in.

  3. Step 3

    To keep moths away from closets and drawers use any of these herbs: Tansy, lavender, yarrow or wormwood dried out and placed in a fabric pouch. Place the pouches in closets and drawers.

  4. Step 4

    Use a combination of tobacco, red cedar chips and pepper place in a fabric pouch and placed in closets and drawers to keep moths away.

  5. Step 5

    Place a drop of lemon oil on your pet's collar to keep fleas away. Another oil that works well is oil of rosemary. For heavy infestations in the yard, use a vet approved flea repellent.

  6. Step 6

    To kill cockroaches without using dangerous poisons, boil some pokeroot in some water and mix in a large amount of molasses. Use deep plates to set around the kitchen where cockroaches frequent. The mixture will attract the cockroach and kill them.
