It is important to teach a child to brush his or her teeth properly. If not taught properly the child will be susceptible to poor habits the rest of his or her life which in turn will result in cavities and possibly gum disease. So given its importance let’s discover how to teach a child as young as two to brush his or her teeth.
The first step you need to take is to make sure your child can spit when you tell him. Even though you will only be putting a very small amount of toothpaste on his brush, you still do not want him to swallow it. So practice by showing him how to spit. Take a cup of water and sip a bit and spit. You can laugh to make this fun. Then have your child try it. Keep repeating it until he has mastered spitting.
Now that your child has learned how to spit, take his brush and without putting any toothpaste on it yet dip it in the water. Place the brush into the child’s mouth and gently scrub the tops and bottoms of his teeth on both sides of his mouth.
Next take the brush and place it on the top of the front teeth and gently scrub the fronts of the tops and bottom teeth up and down several times.
Now try this procedure with a pea size amount of toothpaste. You may have to interrupt at times to give your child a chance to spit.
