Sometimes, the cocktail dress on the hanger at your favorite boutique just doesn't cut it. If you have a flare for design, why not put together your own cocktail dress? You don't need to be a design-school graduate to make this happen, but you will need an active imagination and plenty of inspiration.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sketch pad
  • Pencils
  • Catalogs
  1. Step 1

Take a tour through some of your favorite dress shops to get an idea for what is currently in style. You can design a cocktail dress however you like, but it doesn't hurt to see what's out there now.

  2. Step 2

Determine what body type you have, which will help you decide how to design a cocktail dress for your body. It should be flattering to your best features, and should draw attention away from the features you don't like, such as large thighs or a not-so-flat tummy.

  3. Step 3

Browse a few fashion catalogs for further ideas, focusing on the colors and shapes that will complement your body the best. Look for subtle textures and stitches that give a cocktail dress personality, and don't forget to write down color combinations that you think would look good with your complexion.

  4. Step 4

Sketch a few ideas in a sketch pad, using drawing pencils from an art supply store. If you aren't a decent artist, you can also ask a friend or relative to do this part while you dictate the various design features you want on the cocktail dress.

  5. Step 5

Measure your hips, waist, bust, thighs and shoulders to ensure that the dimensions are correct for your cocktail dress. Adding an inch here and there is better than finishing a garment that is too tight. You can also use fabrics that are designed to stretch so you don't have to worry about precise measurements.

  6. Step 6

Design any additional garments that might go with your cocktail dress, such as a shawl, pendant, bow, wrap or pair of shoes. Alternatively, you can purchase these things once your dress is finished.

  7. Step 7

Hire a seamstress to sew your new cocktail dress, or do the sewing yourself if you think you can handle it. Make sure to leave plenty of time before the event to which you will wear the dress, just in case you make a mistake and need to start over.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that simplicity is best when you design a cocktail dress for the first time.
  • Consider using a fashion company that helps customers design their own clothes. This might be easier than starting from scratch.
