Churchill Downs is the most famous race track in Kentucky and Keeneland comes in right behind after it, but the state has a third track called Ellis Park. Located on the Indiana side of the Ohio River in Henderson, Kentucky, Ellis Park runs a mid-summer meet and has plenty of fun available for all visitors. Here is how to plan a day of racing at the wonderful Ellis Park.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the racing schedule. Though the track is open seven days a week all year round, Ellis only has live racing for a limited part of the summer. Their meet begins on July 4 and ends on Labor Day, and those are the only days when they have live racing at their track. If you're in the area, they are open all year for simulcast wagering on many of the US tracks and the Dubai Racing Club. But live racing is the main attraction and the horses only run on limited days.

  2. Step 2

Attend the big races. Ellis Park is not known for the highest-quality racing that the US has to offer. But check the stakes schedule and plan to go on a day when some better horses will be on display. If you show up on any average weekday, you will probably be stuck betting on lousy claiming and maiden claiming races. If that's okay with you, then fine. Otherwise, you should check the schedule and go on a day when Ellis has some of it's featured races on the card. The biggest race of the year is the Gardenia Stakes.

  3. Step 3

Dine at the track. Ellis really prides itself on the ability to provide a variety of quality dining options for guests. Their dining rooms are nice and if you show up on the early side, you should be able to get a nice table with an excellent finish line view. These are the most popular and highly demanded tables. The Sky Theatre is higher in the air and provides a full view of the entire track. The Clubhouse is a nice air-conditioned, indoor dining area that also comes with a TV at each table in case you can't see the horses well.
