Applesauce that you buy at the supermarket tastes fine, but there is something about your own kitchen that adds a little something extra to the applesauce, giving it an extra special flavor. Making homemade applesauce is an excellent way to spend a rainy afternoon with your kids.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ingredients
  • 3 to 4 lbs. of apples (Fuji, Granny Smith or gravenstein)
  • 1 lemon
  • 3 inches of cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 cup of dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 tsp. of salt
  • Items You Will Need
  • Potato peeler
  • Large pot with a cover
  • Potato masher
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Juicer
  1. Step 1

    Rinse all of your apples.

  2. Step 2

Peel and core all of the apples and cut them into quarters.

  3. Step 3

Cut your lemon in half and squeeze all of the juice from it. Set the juice aside and use your potato peeler to slice four strips from the lemon peel.

  4. Step 4

Combine all of your ingredients into a pot, cover and cook over medium heat. Allow the mixture to boil until the apples are completely cooked. It usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

  5. Step 5

When you are satisfied that the apples are cooked, you will want to allow the applesauce to cool for approximately 10 minutes. When the mixture is cool enough for you to handle, you want to remove the strips of lemon peel as well as the cinnamon sticks.

  6. Step 6

Use your potato masher to mash the chunks of apples.

  7. Step 7

Store the applesauce in your refrigerator until you are ready to eat it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have made too much applesauce, don’t worry about it. Put it in a tightly sealed container and store it in your freezer. Frozen it will stay good for up to one year.
