Adding flowers to your favorite recipes can lend both flavor and eye appeal. Here are some simple ways that you can incorporate flowers into salads, main dishes, soups, appetizers and desserts.

    Which Flowers are Safe?

  1. Step 1

Know what type of flowers are safe to cook with and which foods they will complement. For sweet dishes try violets, apple or citrus blossoms, and carnation petals. For main dishes consider basil or broccoli flowerettes.

  2. Step 2

Use flowers in salads. Add color and flavor by adding fresh blossoms to your favorite salad recipes. For a hint of lemon or orange flavor try tossing in citrus blossoms. Mix gently. Always add fresh flowers at the last minute. Refrigerate until serving time.

  3. Step 3

Top off main dishes: Use fresh basil flowers to garnish pasta, rice or meat dishes. Also use them on top of your favorite soups and stews. Broccoli flowerettes are bright yellow and lend an attractive appearance to cream dishes, stir fry and other main dishes. Use them wherever you would use broccoli itself, to enhance flavor and lend a touch of color. When using fresh flowers on hot dishes, be sure to serve immediately.

  4. Step 4

Do up those desserts. Use fresh apple blossoms to garnish your apple pie or apple cakes. Citrus blossoms complement any citrus flavored dessert. Use them to complement an elegant lemon souffle, or use them to top off a simple orange sherbert. Garnish cakes, and other confections, with rows of carnation petals, to set off your favorite dessert creations.

  5. Step 5

Bedazzle your breakfast. Place sweet flavored flowers, such as violets, citrus or apple blossoms, on pancakes, french toast and Belgian Waffles. Sprinkle with powdered sugar for an elegant start to any day.

  6. Step 6

Float fresh flowers in your favorite beverages for a refreshing bit of color and elegance. Or, if you prefer, freeze violets and fruit blossoms in ice cube trays, then add to your favorite drinks.
