Knowing how to slow down in soccer when you need to is almost as important as the gift of speed is when dribbling or making a run on goal. At times when playing soccer, you'll need to slow down to let your teammate catch up or to make time before challenging an opposing player. Here's how to slow down in soccer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Kick the ball more gently so it does not roll as far and you don't have to race to keep up with it as it barrels ahead of you. The tighter the ball is to you, the more you can slow down.

  2. Step 2

Take shorter strides as you slow down. Stop running as quickly and put the brakes on mentally.

  3. Step 3

Plant your heels first to slow down; toes first generally make you go more quickly.

  4. Step 4

Reduce your pace to a light jog or fast walk, depending on how fast or slow you want to go. Keep the ball with you, using ball tricks if necessary to shake other players.

Tips & Warnings
  • Slow down in soccer the same way you would slow down after a fast race or a sprint. The only difference here is you need a little coordination when dealing with the soccer ball.
