Traditional resumes begin with a “Career Objective,” a one or two sentence statement that tells a prospective employer what you want to do in the future. While there is nothing wrong with having an objective and goal, you will not get hired for what you hope to achieve. A better approach is to write a summary of qualifications; a brief bio that summarizes what you have already done and how you will use that experience to benefit the intended company that you are sending your resume to in the future. Follow the simple steps below to develop a resume summary that will get you the job you want.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Resume paper

Step1
Develop a general list of your professional experience, accomplishments, qualities and talents. This list should include the amount of time you have held a particular position, benchmarks that you reached, your successfully completed responsibilities and so on. For example: Increased team sales revenue by 20 percent.
Step2
Devise a list of reasons why you are the perfect candidate for the particular position. This list should be based on the requested qualifications of the employer. After devising this list, create phrases by using positive words to describe your qualifications and then back them up with a specific examples from the list you created in step one. Example phrase: Motivational manager that increased team sales revenue by 20 percent last quarter.
Step3
Determine what qualifications and accomplishments phrases from Step 2 are the most pertinent to the intended position . Consider choosing those that show the variety and extent of your skills, accomplishments and personal attributes worth noting and specific examples that highlight your professional objective.
Step4
Take the five or six most appealing qualification/accomplishment phrases and piece them together in a clear and concise matter to complete your resume summary. You should spend some time adding and subtracting different phrases to determine which ones work best for your resume summary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your resume summary should be located at the top of your resume underneath your name and contact information.
  • Develop different resume summaries for every different positions that you are interested in.
