How to Perform Behind the Back Bo Staff Techniques

Passing the Bo staff behind the back is a seemingly complex method of moving the pole from one hand to the other in between strikes. As you work with this technique, you will find your agility and dexterity with the Bo staff improving. This movement works great off your standard front spin, but can be performed out of a figure eight, helicopter or throw. If you’re looking to add a little more variation and visual interest to your performance, the behind-the-back technique is the perfect way to do just that.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bo staff
  1. Step 1

Hold the Bo staff in your right hand with an overhand grip, holding it out in front of you and parallel with the floor.

  2. Step 2

Swing the Bo staff behind you, twisting your wrist in a clockwise motion until you touch your hand to your back. This motion will sweep the left tip out and around you. It will also appear as if you’re rolling your lower palm around your hip.

  3. Step 3

At the same time, reach your left hand around your back, palm facing the wall behind you, until you come into contact with the Bo staff.

  4. Step 4

Grab the Bo staff with your left hand and swing the right tip out and down to the floor as you bring the pole out in front of you. This movement should aid you in moving into a front spin, where you’d sweep the tip pointing to the ground in a counterclockwise motion and execute the spin.

  5. Step 5

Spin your Bo staff into your right hand and repeat. Continue to practice this technique until the movement is smooth and fast.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure there is enough room behind you and to your sides to execute the behind-the-back Bo staff technique.
  • Keep breakables out of the area when working with the Bo staff.
