Step 1
Make a list of all the nearby salons. You can find this information in the phone book, or you can so a search online using your zipcode. Write down all the salons with their addresses and phone numbers.
-
Step 2
Find out prices. Call each salon and find out what they charge for the services you need. Remember “spas” will probably charge more for services. Some salons will pretty much be full service, other will just have a fewer options.
-
Step 3
Ask around. Does someone at work always have amazing nails? Does one of your friends already have a favorite place? Ask the people you already know if they have a place in mind.
-
Step 4
Look at reviews. The best way to do this is online. Do a search for reviews of each of the salons. Not all salons will have reviews posted, but many will. See what other people have to say about each of these places and add this to your notes.
-
Step 5
Shop around. Once you have a list and notes compiled, pick your top five salons. Make appointments at each salon, or just go in for a walk-in appointment. This will probably be done over time, seeing how costs can add up quickly.
-
Step 6
Assess the salon. When you walk in the door, what does it smell like? Yes there will be some nail polish/nail polish remover/miscellaneous nail product smell, but there are limits. If it is so strong that it gives you a headache or nearly gags you, walk away. The ventilation is not good, the salon is not clean, or they are using a chemical they should not be using. Look around. Does the salon look clean and professional. If it looks dirty or just thrown together, leave. If it passes the initial inspection, how long does it take for walk-ins? Is the salon busy? If you have an appointment, do they get you in on time?
-
Step 7
Assess the service. How did the staff treat you? Did they give you what you asked for? Are you happy with results? Some of these things will take time even after the appointment to determine. Did the experience meet your personal and nail care needs?
-
Step 8
Repeat Steps 6 and 7 until you find the salon you want. If your first five are disappointing, pick your next five. Some people will find “their” salon on the first time out. Others will take more time and more effort. Hopefully the end result is a "home" salon you can depend on for wonderful nails and service.
