Dirty diapers are inevitable when you have youngsters. In fact, newborn babies can go through up to twelve diapers a day and they really begin to pile up. While you may think the smell that goes along with diapers is inevitable, there is a simple way to rid of the odor. You no longer need to resign your home or nursery to the urine stench, or worse. These simple steps will keep your home smelling as fresh as can be. Unless told otherwise, guests won't even know you have a baby.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Baby wipes
  • Diaper pail you can seal
  • Air freshener spray of your choice
  • Large, outdoor garbage can
Step1
Bring your baby to the designated changing room. Whether this room is the nursery, bathroom, or laundry room, make it consistent. The fewer places you change your baby's diaper, the fewer the places you will need to neutralize.
Step2
Lay her down on the changing table and remove the diaper. If it is only wet, the odor will not be as strong. If it is dirty, the odor will immediately intensify. Place a baby wipe over the saturated area of the dirty diaper and set aside. The wipe will help minimize stench spreading.
Step3
Wipe your baby's bottom area with additional wipes as needed. Place each wipe in the open diaper on top of the initial baby wipe.
Step4
Close the diaper by rolling the front of the dirty diaper towards the back. When you have a diaper roll, secure it in place with the two velcro/sticky tabs. Now you have a nice diaper packet. Although the smell still exists, it is minimized.
Step5
Place the diaper in a diaper pail and leave it until first thing the next morning. You should empty your diaper pale each morning and place the contents into an outdoor, closeable garbage can. You need one that latches closed to prevent animals from getting inside.
Step6
Clean your diaper pail once a week or more, depending on the type of smells coming from it. Use a solution of half vinegar and half water to neutralize and clean. Fill a spray bottle with the solution, spray the inside of the diaper pail, wipe clean with paper towels, and you are finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wash your hands after you change your baby's diaper. Having a stinky house is one thing, but having filthy, stinky hands is quite another.
  • If a smell still lingers, simply open a window for an hour or spray your favorite air freshener into the air.
  • During hot summer months, you may want to keep the garbage can out of the garage. The smell intensifies with heat.
