- Practice mats
- Lifting techniques
- Tumbling techniques
- Adult supervision
-
Step 1
Take cheerleading seriously. Although the routines and stunts look glamorous, cheerleading is a sport which produces many injuries yearly. It is important to be aware of the possibility of sustaining life-long injuries while participating in cheerleading.
-
Step 2
Wear and train with safe equipment. Choose organization approved shoes which feature proper ankle support and non-slip soles. Practice routines and tumbling exercise on cushioned mats to help prevent severe neck injuries.
-
Step 3
Use proper lifting and tumbling techniques. Attend regular classes to stay current on all safety procedures. No stunt should be performed without the required number of spotters. " Flyers" should use correct body mechanics while in the air.
-
Step 4
Perform age and skill appropriate stunts. Difficulty levels in routines should be gradually increased to provide proper practice time allowing for good squad communication. Performing stunts that are too difficult can lead to frustration and increased mistakes.
-
Step 5
Ensure adequate adult supervision. Cheerleading instructors should be present at all team practices to reinforce safety procedures and provide first aid if necessary.
