Step 1
Make sure that the size of the class is limited. A ratio of six puppies per instructor or assistant is ideal.
-
Step 2
Be sure that the class does not accept dogs that are over 18 weeks old. It is important for learning and safety that all of the puppies be close in age.
-
Step 3
Make sure that all training methods use positive reinforcement. Punishment does not work when training a puppy!
-
Step 4
Ask if handouts are provided during the class. This will make it easier for you to share what you and your puppy are learning with the rest of your family.
-
Step 5
Ask if you can observe a class before registering your puppy. This will help you to decide if you feel comfortable at a particular training school.
