Find the right training class for you and your puppy.

It is a good idea to take your puppy to a beginning obedience class that teaches the basics (sit, stay, come). It is very important to socialize your puppy, and puppy training classes provide an excellent opportunity to do this. The following article will discuss how to choose a training class for your puppy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure that the size of the class is limited. A ratio of six puppies per instructor or assistant is ideal.

  2. Step 2

Be sure that the class does not accept dogs that are over 18 weeks old. It is important for learning and safety that all of the puppies be close in age.

  3. Step 3

Make sure that all training methods use positive reinforcement. Punishment does not work when training a puppy!

  4. Step 4

Ask if handouts are provided during the class. This will make it easier for you to share what you and your puppy are learning with the rest of your family.

  5. Step 5

Ask if you can observe a class before registering your puppy. This will help you to decide if you feel comfortable at a particular training school.

Tips & Warnings
  • Attending a puppy training class will help to motivate you to find time to work with your puppy at home.
  • Once you and your puppy have successfully completed the basic obedience class, most training schools over more advanced classes.
  • Never use a training method that makes you feel uncomfortable or one that may harm your puppy.
