One of the most popular things to do during the spring and summer of the year is to relax out on the deck in a favorite outdoor furniture lounge. A good feature of any deck is handrails that line the outer perimeter of the deck and add to the beauty of the home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the length and depth of the deck and record the measurements. Determine if and where an opening will exist to exit the deck onto the yard. Mark a 36 inch space for this.

  2. Step 2

Cut top and bottom rails the length and width of the deck. Make a 1 ½ mark every 16 inches for the vertical pieces of the handrail.

  3. Step 3

Determine the desired height of the handrails and subtract 3 inches for the top and bottom rails from the desired height. This is the measurement for the vertical pieces of the handrails. Cut as many as required plus a few extra.

  4. Step 4

Assemble parts with 16d box nails. Be sure to use two vertical pieces in two of the corners to secure the handrails that butt each other in the corners.

  5. Step 5

Stand handrails up and position them on the previously determined area and secure them to the deck with 16d box nails. Attach adjoining handrails in the corners with 16d box nails. Attach the handrail to the house with 16d box nails.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear safety glasses.
  • A stair stringer may be needed depending on the deck height.
