Things You'll Need:
- One aluminum pop can
- 10 to 12 feet of 15 pound test fishing line
- 1 medium to small sinker
- 1 hook
- Bait
- Handled net
-
Step 1
Squash the pop can slightly in the middle, making it hourglass shaped. Hold the fishing line across the middle of a pop can lying on its side, with about 12 inches of line hanging down toward you and the rest going away from your body.
-
Step 2
Wrap the line around the can twice, passing the line under the first two loops as you begin a third wrap, then loop under the first two loops one more time and pull tight. This begins a knot called a fisherman's bend. Finish the knot by tying four half hitch knots around the pine going away from your body. Make the knot by wrapping once around the line going away from your body, then passing through the loop you just made. See Resources for pictures of fisherman's bend knot and half hitch knot.
-
Step 3
Attach a sinker about two feet from the other end of the line, using two or three half hitch knots.
-
Step 4
Using a fisherman's bend knot, referring to resources below, attach a spinner. Attach your hook to the spinner by the loop at the end.
-
Step 5
Bait your hook, then wrap most of the line around the can until you have three to five feet left unwrapped. The line should just barely brush the ground.
-
Step 6
Hold the can with your off hand and swing the line with your dominant hand, letting line swing out over the water and drop into it. To pull the line in, wrap it around the can. Use a net to bring your fish onto shore.
