Insulated Roman shades not only dress a window, but they can also help lower your energy bills by retaining warm indoor air during winter and by blocking out hot air during the summer. Insulated Roman shades are also an effective noise barrier for napping babies and other light sleepers. Follow these steps when installing insulated Roman shades.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • insulated Roman shade, pre-measured
  • screwdriver
  • drill
  • drill bits
  • pencil
  • tape measure
  • level
  • ladder or step stool
  • mounting hardware, included with shade

Follow These Steps to Install Insulated Roman Shades

  1. Step 1

Decide whether the insulated Roman shade will be mounted on the inside or the outside of the window casing. Be sure to measure the shade prior to purchasing to ensure a proper fit.

  2. Step 2

Hold the shade up to the window and mark the desired location with the pencil. For inside mount, his can be done by inserting the pencil into the pre-drilled mounting holes located in the headrail. When mounting the insulated Roman shade on the outside of the window casing, be sure that the shade is centered and mark the outside edges of the shade either above the window or on the sides.

  3. Step 3

For inside mount, drill a pilot hole at each pencil marking using the same size drill bit as the included mounting screws.

  4. Step 4

Align the shade with the pre-drilled holes. Insert a mounting screw into one of the holes and screw until it is tightened. Insert another mounting screw into the pre-drilled hole on the other end of the insulated Roman shade and tighten. Be sure that the shade is secure and the cords are accessible.

  5. Step 5

For outside mount, measure approximately 2" in from the outside of the shade. Place an "L" bracket, included with the shade, on wall above or on the sides of the desired location. Place a pencil mark in the hole of the "L" bracket to mark the hole for drilling. Mark both ends using the bracket and pencil. Be sure to check the position of the pencil marks with a level.

  6. Step 6

Drill a pilot hole at each pencil mark, making sure that they are level and aligned. Attach the "L" brackets on both ends with the supplied screws. Mount the insulated Roman shade to the "L" brackets by pressing firmly against the wall. Be sure that the shade is centered and the cords are accessible. Attach the headrail, if included, to the "L" brackets.

  7. Step 7

Attach cord cleats to the wall using the supplied screws. Cord cleats are used to secure the cord neatly and safely out of the way.

Tips & Warnings
  • The use of a third "L" bracket may be necessary for long shades.
  • Wall anchors may be used for especially large or heavy shades.
  • It is important to attach and use cord cleats to secure the cord. This may help prevent dangerous accidents, especially around children.

on 5/13/2009 PLEASE remember that although cord cleats help keep children away from the front cord, most Roman shades have cords in the BACK of the shade that can trap and strangle babies and small children.
