Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Yellow Pages
  • Phone
  1. Step 1

Keep in mind that there are many places that you can search. The Internet or the Yellow Pages may be a good place to start. You may search for podiatrist in your area through the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) or through your states podiatry board website. You may ask friends or family members who they recommend. Speaking to your primary care physician can be helpful.

  2. Step 2

Once you have an idea which podiatrist you would like to go to it is best to check with your health insurance company. Depending on your insurance plan you may be limited to only seeing certain podiatrists. If you seek treatment by a podiatrist that is out of your network you may have to pay the bill up front.

  3. Step 3

Phone a couple of the podiatry offices to get an idea on prices and billing procedures. Ask about their cancellation policy as some may require 24 hours notice otherwise you are sent a bill.

  4. Step 4

Ask about the opening hours and see if these work with your schedule. What is the wait time for emergency appointments? How long does it take to get an appointment?

  5. Step 5

You may need to look at local transport and handicap accessibility to make sure that you can get to the podiatry office easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • Each state has their specific set of licensing requirements for a podiatrist to meet. You can find out if there has been any disciplinary action taken against a podiatrist by calling your state board of podiatry.
