How to Make Escalloped Potatoes

This classic recipe for scalloped potatoes is the perfect accompaniment to any dinner, but it is often served with baked ham. Read on to learn how to make scalloped potatoes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup margarine
  • 1/4 cup flour (all purpose)
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 5 cups of potatoes
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper

    The Sauce

  1. Step 1

    Start by cooking onion in margarine until soft. Do not brown. Stir in four, salt and pepper. Add milk. Cook and stir until the sauce is thick and bubbly. Remove from heat.

  2. Step 2

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place half of the sliced potatoes in a greased 2 quart casserole dish. Cover with half of the sauce. Repeat layers.

  3. Step 3

    Bake, covered, for 45 minutes stirring once. Uncover, and bake about 30 minutes more until potatoes are soft when a knife is inserted.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can add 1/4 cup of shredded cheese to this recipe. Just reduce the salt to 1 tsp.
