  1. Loving Your Skunk

    • 1

First of all, training a pet skunk has a lot to do with love. You first must choose a pet skunk from a reputable breeder, and make sure that he is healthy. Like a dog or a cat, you will want to take your pet skunk to the vet for routine check ups, and vaccinations. Also, your pet skunk will need to be de-scented at the age of about 4 weeks, if he hasn't already had that procedure done at the breeding farm. This is the only way to keep him in your house. Once he no longer has the ability to spray, he cannot be let outside or he will be killed by other animals almost right away. Remember, your pet skunk cannot be de-clawed, but it is ok because he won't dig up your carpet or scratch your furniture.

Next, you must make sure that your pet skunk has a place to go to the bathroom. She will instinctively go in a corner, so put a litter box into a clean corner for her to use. Show her the box, and let her dig in it. She will probably go int he box right away, just like a cat. If she doesn't, try to capture the smell of her droppings or urine and put it into the box, and show her the box again. Your pet skunk will want to go in the same place, so as long as you can get her to use the litter box once, she'll be happy. However, remember that your pet skunk is going to be shy, so when you are training your pet skunk, keep her litter box in a corner that is private and only for her.

The next part of training your pet skunk revolves around what you should feed him. Just like people, dogs and cats, pet skunks need lots of variety. She'll enjoy vegetables and fruit, as well as freshly cooked meat and grains. She will also enjoy something sweet each day - like a cookie - for desert. A good diet will also include things like yogurt or cottage cheese. Be sure to feed her at the same time each day, and provide her with a food and water dish that is all her own. She should always have access to fresh water.

When you are training your pet skunk, another thing to keep in mind is that you are going to have a pet that loves you very much. This means that she will want to be near you, even when you aren't there. She might take your bedding or blankets to make a next for herself, and might steal your clothing to cuddle on when she misses you. She also might dig through your potted plants or open your purse to see if there are any treasures there. So, be sure that you put things away and keep things in cupboards and drawers that she cannot reach. Skunks are very strong, and she'll even be able to move furniture to find things. However, remember that she won't tear up any of your belongings or destroy anything. She's only taking them because she loves you, after all!

Lastly, be sure that you are providing your pet skunk with lots of love. Training your pet skunk is rooted in the amount of love that you are willing and able to give her. If you can give her lots of love, she'll show you that love in return, and everyone will be happy!

Tips & Warnings

  • Always shower your pet skunk with love!

  • He'll be fine in a large dog crate if you need to go away for a few hours and don't want him into anything.

  • Don't feed your pet skunk chocolate or sunflowers, as these are poisonous for her.

I've been reading, and a pet skunk sounds like a pet that I'd like to have. But I was wondering, would it be okay if I had 2 well mannered calm adult cats with the skunk (I'd get a young one so as to get use to cats) or would this be a bad idea?
