Cook Without Sugar

Everyone is trying to reduce the sugar in their diet these days. Some do it because of diabetes or in an effort to keep from becoming diabetic. Others avoid sugar simply because of how it makes them feel or because of the detriment sugar can be to anyone's health. Knowing how to cook without sugar means that you can still enjoy many of the sweet things you love without eating the white stuff you know you shouldn't.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Honey
  • Maple Syrup
  • Splenda
  • Artificial Sweeteners
  1. Step 1

Begin by looking at your recipe. What are the ingredients? How much sugar is in the recipe? What type of food are you cooking? Some foods will taste better with certain kinds of sweeteners or you may find you simply prefer one sweetener over the others.

  2. Step 2

Consider using honey as a substitute in your recipe. Use 7/8 cup honey for every cup of sugar in the recipe. Also, reduce the liquid in the recipe by three tablespoons. Complete the rest of the recipe according to the directions.

  3. Step 3

Another popular substitute is maple syrup. If you are cooking then simply use 3/4 cup maple syrup for each cup of sugar. If you are baking then use 3/4 cup syrup but then decrease the liquid used by 3 tablespoons just like you do when cooking with honey.

  4. Step 4

For a simpler way to cook without sugar, try using Splenda. This sugar substitute has become very popular partly because of its taste and also because it is so easy to use. Splenda can be used in place of sugar, cup for cup. It's that easy.

  5. Step 5

In addition to Splenda, there are other artificial sweeteners such as Sweet N Low or Equal that can be used in cooking. Read the directions on the package to determine what amount to use. This will vary according to brand.

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all artificial sweeteners will work well for baking. Try using half sugar and half the substitute for better results.
