Softball scoring is exactly the same as baseball scoring. The score is measured by how many "runs" each team scores in the duration of the game. Here you will learn how to recognize a run, and how to keep score in softball.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your choice of the below:
  • Large score cards
  • Electronic scoreboard
  • Chalk board with chalk
  • Pen or pencil with paper
  1. Step 1

If a pitch is hit by the batter and the batter manages to run to a base without being thrown out, count that person as on base. A runner may be thrown out at first base, but the runner must be tagged out at second, third, or home base.

  2. Step 2

If a batter hits the ball out of the park, or rounds all the bases and touches home before being tagged out, count it as a scored run.

  3. Step 3

If a runner is on base when a batter hits a ball, and the runner manages to run around the remaining bases and touch home plate before being tagged, tally a run.

  4. Step 4

Know that a runner may also "steal" a run at any time by running and touching home plate before being tagged.

  5. Step 5

By the end of the game, award the win to whichever team scores more runs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep track of runs with a pen or pencil and a piece of paper. Alternatively, the score may be kept track of by way of large scorecards which are displayed for all to see. Many baseball fields have electronic score boards to display the running total of the score.
  • Whatever way the teams choose to keep track of score, make sure everybody knows what the score is at all times. This will avoid conflict.
