How to Choose Emotionally Uplifting Essential Oils

When it comes to having the blahs, essential oils are wonderful for uplifting you and making you feel more positive and upbeat. You can also use them to diffuse potentially negative situations or “downer” environments by taking a sniff ahead of time, and carrying them with you for reinforcement.The practice of using essential oils is known as aromatherapy, and there are over three dozen oils from which you can choose to treat different issues. The power of essential oils comes from the fact that their fragrance works on the brain’s limbic system which controls the major body functions, and their chemicals help trigger the body’s ability to heal.Here’s how to select and prepare essential oils that will help to uplift you and brighten your day.

    Prepare Essential Oils to Uplift and Brighten Your Day

  1. Step 1

    Choose 100 percent pure essential oils because only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100 percent pure." You can find them at health food stores and on-line. Don’t use synthetic oils. They do not have the same benefits.

  2. Step 2

    Select several different oils that appeal to you. For oils that are uplifting and make you feel brighter, some of the best choices are Sweet Basil, Bergamot, Cinammon, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Neroli, Orange, Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, and Spearmint. Most stores have tester bottles, so take a few whiffs and choose two or three that you really like.

  3. Step 3

    Avoid “wear-out” when sniffing multiple essential oils. Take a short break and inhale a few deep breaths to clear your nose and give your brain a chance to reset.

  4. Step 4

    Make a hand massage oil. First mix the essential oil with the almond oil, which is known as a "carrier" oil, to create the massage oil. Measure the almond oil into the glass bottle, then add three to six drops of essential oil per teaspoon of almond oil. Shake well. Massage the oil into your hands and inhale the aroma for several minutes to help you feel brighter and more uplifted.

  5. Step 5

    Make a foot bath or hand bath. Fill a large bowl two-thirds full with very warm water and add three to four drops of the essential oil. The warm water helps the blood vessels to dilate, and the essential oils are absorbed through the skin. Inhale the aromas as you soak your hands or feet to get more aromatherapy benefits.

  6. Step 6

    Keep a bottle of the essential oil in your desk or briefcase for an at work or on-the-road quick fix. You can sprinkle one to two drops on a handkerchief and inhale the oil's aroma. If you don’t have sensitive skin, you can put a drop directly on your palms, rub them gently together and inhale. For added benefits, put a drop at the base of your throat, like perfume or cologne.

Tips & Warnings
  • With citrus -derived oils, such as Bergamot, Grapefruit and Orange, they tend to lose their strength after a year, so buy them only as you need them. You can mix essential oils, but it’s recommended to not mix more than three together. For anyone with sensitive skin, dilute the essential oils even more.
  • Alternate essential oils. Oils have a fatigue factor-your body gets used to them after a while. By rotating to the other essential oil after two to three weeks, your body will respond better. Store all oils in a cool dry place. Keep the lids firmly closed to prevent evaporation and keep away from sunlight.
  • Do not use oils if you are pregnant without getting professional advice.
  • If any skin irritation occurs, stop using immediately.
  • People with pollen allergies should be careful when using Chamomile essential oil, since they may have a higher sensitivity to it.
