Today, many people choose to make a living by working from the home. Telecommuting has become more commonplace, as employers look for creative ways to manage costs and still handle necessary tasks. If you are interested in working from home, here are some ideas on how to find work that is right for you.

From Quick Guide: Work from Home
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Phone
  • Internet Connection
  • Electronic Resume
  1. Step 1

Determine what type of work you are qualified to perform while remaining in the home. For people with excellent phone and word processing skills, functioning as a virtual administrative assistant may be ideal. Persons with strong sales skills may find work at home opportunities related to work as an independent distributor for products or services. Assess your skill set and decide what you have to offer in the way of job skills that can be used at home with ease.

  2. Step 2

Contact local employment agencies and determine if they provide work at home assignments. There is a good chance that local businesses are looking for people to function as virtual administrative assistants or other types of work that can easily be accomplished with a phone line, an Internet connection, and a computer.

  3. Step 3

Visit work at home job sites online. Many of these job sites are free of charge. Some sites will include a wide range of work at home opportunities, while others will focus on specific types of jobs, such as writing assignments, order processing, or online sales. Check the sites regularly for new opportunities.

  4. Step 4

Conduct your own online search. Use one of the more popular browsers to conduct keyword searches that are relevant to the type of work you wish to do from home. This approach will often help you find new job sites that are focused on your areas of expertise, as well as point you toward online classified ads that you can respond to directly.

  5. Step 5

Network with other persons who work from home. This can be accomplished by placing an ad in your local newspaper, or by joining one of the several online message boards that are devoted to persons seeking to work from home. Often, you can share tips with one another, and possibly help each other find the ideal work at home position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Refine your resume so that you highlight the skills and experience that would make you an ideal candidate for a work at home position.
  • Never pay a fee to join a site that promises work at home opportunities. Most of these sites do not guarantee you will find work through their system. The free sites often will provide plenty of opportunities that you can follow up on without paying a cent to anyone.
  • Any work at home job offer that sounds too good to be true probably is really too good to be true. Avoid promises of becoming wealthy overnight, or any “opportunity” that makes outlandish claims on the amount of money you can make in a given week. Stick with work at home opportunities that are specific about what is required, and what type of compensation is offered.
