How to Become a Contractor

There are a few things to consider before deciding to become a contractor.

Being a contractor can be a rewarding job. You can be your own boss, make your own hours and set your own pay. Also, you get to work at a job you love. Still, you should think about a few things if you wish to join the many men and women who proudly call themselves contractors.

1. Decide if you will have a specialty, such as roofing, electrical, carpentry or painting, or if you will be a general contractor.

2. Acquire the necessary skills through on-the-job training, by becoming a helper to a contractor or by taking classes.

3. Acquire the tools necessary to do the work you've chosen.

4. Purchase liability insurance to cover any damage you may cause on the job.

5. Get proof of workers' compensation.

6. Find out if you need a contractor's license in the city where you will work.

7. Advertise with local ads in your newspaper. Tell your family and friends. Print business cards and pass them out to potential customers.
