Here is how you can ascend the ranks of the music world and become a professional DJ.

1
Start by making your own mixes. Burn some disks, and play them back. Decide on the type of music that you would like to DJ. Be honest with yourself, and critique your own ideas.

2
Volunteer at a local bar or club. Smart on a small scale. Go for a small place where a DJ would be welcomed and treated well. You want to be at a place where you can surprise people with great music. You don't want to go into an established place, and be expected to be a pro on your first outing. As in all professions, you need to pay your dues.

3
Create a business card. You want to be creative here. Having a boring, business-like business card will be a killer here. A DJ should have a fresh, fun business card with all the essentials clearly written on the card. Pass the card out whenever possible. You never know what connections a single person may have. Be friendly, kind, and approachable.

4
Network using any resources you have. Call in favors, and call up anybody you know who may be connected to the music scene. You have some experience behind you, and a better sense of who you are as a DJ. It's time to really get started. If you are in a big city like New York or Los Angeles, consider getting a hosting job at a restaurant. You can meet a lot of people that way, and feel free to pass your card along when it's appropriate. Wait until you are asked about yourself, though. You'll look like an idiot if you start talking about yourself when the guest has shown no personal interest.

Attempt to get a manager. Yes, professional DJs often have managers and agents. Your manager can work on the business side, and you can focus on your music.
