How to Turn a Twin Sheet into Pillowcases
This is a fun and easy project for a beginning sewer, and a quick way to update the bedroom without spending a fortune.Twin size sheets are often on sale for less than $5, and come in lots of pretty colors and styles. If you like the shabby chic look, thrift stores are a great place to shop to find vintage textiles, too.The pillowcase pictured was made from a circa-1970's fitted twin sheet and lace edging from a 1950's tablecloth. Things You'll Need
- for two pillowcases:
- 1 twin bedsheet, flat
- 2 pieces lace trim or contrasting material, about 4" x 24" each
- sewing machine or needle and thread
- dressmaking pins
- scissors

How to Turn a Twin Sheet into Pillowcases

Place a bed pillow onto sheet in one corner. Measure 2" allowance on each side, and cut around pillow. You should have enough fabric to make pillowcases for two standard size bed pillows following these instructions.

Turn fabric right sides together, and hand or machine stitch around top, one side and bottom, leaving one side open for trim. (You will be stitching on the "wrong" side of fabric).

Turn pillowcase right side out, and use dressmaker pins to attach trim to open side.

Machine or hand stitch trim to side of pillowcase. Trim any loose threads and iron if necessary.Pillowcase is done!
Tips & Warnings
You can make three pillowcases from a full or queen size sheet. You can also hem the edges of the pillowcase and skip the trim.
Be sure to use the pillow you're going to cover as a measure on the sheet, and leave the 2" allowance on each side.
