How to Join the Police Department

  1. Step 1

Determine if you are qualified. You have to be at least 21-years-old, have a high school diploma or G.E.D., and have no criminal record. You also have to be in good health. This includes both physical and mental health.

  2. Step 2

Get training at a police academy. You can do this either at an independently run academy or at an academy run by a police department. If you choose the latter, you will need to be hired by the department before you begin training. This is where you will learn most of the skills you will need in order to do the job.

  3. Step 3

Review the skills you learned during the academy. You will be tested on those skills through written and practical tests. This will help the academy determine if you are ready to work as a police officer. If you pass, you will receive your certification and you will begin working as a member of the department or you can start looking for work as a qualified applicant.
