    Relieving the Pain of TMJ

  1. Step 1

There are several things that can be done to alleviate the pain of TMJ. First the easiest thing to try is an anti-inflammatory medication, such as aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen. These medicines are usually extremely helpful in relieving pain.

  2. Step 2

Next, if the medicines are not working or not completely relieving the pain, try ice packs. Ice packs usually numb the area and decrease the inflammation. Wrap the ice pack clean, dry towel while using and apply it for no longer than 15 minutes. The ice can be alternated with a heat pack which will help to relax muscles and also reduce pain. Wrap the heat pack in a towel to avoid burns. Apply either heat or cold to the side of your face.

  3. Step 3

There are a few different jaw exercises that you can try for pain as well. See your doctor or a physical therapist for jaw exercises that meet your needs. Or try improving your posture. Just improving your neck, head and shoulder posture can relieve stress. The proper jaw posture is to have your teeth somewhat apart when your jaw muscles are relaxed. Your tongue should slightly touch the roof of your mouth.

  4. Step 4

Another technique to try is that of Relaxation. Try deep, slow breathes as these have been proven to relax the body and reduce pain. Note: This technique is also used in childbirth for the very same reason.

  5. Step 5

Finally, the last method to try is the Soft Diet method. It is a fact that eating corn-on-the-cob uses the muscles in jaw much more so than eating creamed corn. Even cutting your food into smaller bites make your jaw muscles work less. So take it easy on yourself and don't work your jaw so hard to eat your food. You may just relieve your TMJ in the process.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are constantly or regularly suffering from TMJ, then it is best to avoid chewy, crunchy or hard foods including gum.
  • If none of these method work, there are other methods including surgery, being fitted for a facial device or stress management therapy. Your doctor will discuss these options with you.
  • If the problem persists and/or these methods are not providing you any relief, see your doctor.
  • Diagnosing TMJ is often difficult so it may be best to get a second opinion.
  • If you grind your teeth, chew your lips or clench your jaw a lot, make certain to tell your doctor this as these are considered bad tension-related habits.
  • Avoid yawning too widely when you yawn as this may cause stress to your jaw muscles.
