    How to Grow Lilies

  1. Step 1

Decide where you want to plant your lilies. You need to pick a location that has good soil. If you do not have such a location, you can create a flower bed and put gravel in the bottom. You will also need to add some plant food into the soil in order to give the lilies the proper nutrients. Depending on the type of lily you are planting, you may need a more damp location. Many lilies will do well in full sun, but if you can give them partial shade, it will help them preserve their color and season.

  2. Step 2

Now that you have a location, it is time to plant your lilies. You need to dig at least a foot down for the soil, and the same goes for a raised flower bed. You can now mix your fertilizer into the soil, and if you need to adjust the soil, you can add sand at this time as well. Depending on if you have an American lily or imported one, you will have to plant them at different times during the year. American lilies can be planted around mid-October. Plant the lily bulb at least three times its own depth and space them at least seven inches apart.

  3. Step 3

Caring for your lilies can be one of the most important steps to ensure your lilies grow properly. You need to keep the flower bed free of weeds, but be gentle on the soil so you do not interfere with the lilies' roots. You can add some mulch or peat moss to help keep the weeds out of your flower garden. The mulch or moss will also help conserve the moisture by keeping their roots cooler. Once the dry weather comes, you can water the flowers to at least 6 inches once a week. Then give them some fertilizer and plant food at least once during the summer.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you happen to notice the virulent disease lily mosaic on your lilies, the only option you have is to dig the plant up and burn it. By keeping your flowers dust free, you can help prevent them from getting these diseases.
