Finding the right suit is key for any professional woman or even for a job interview if you want to be taken seriously. The right fit insures your credibility as well as your comfort. These tips will help you to get the perfect fit every time.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of jacket you want. The jacket will really determine the style for the entire suit so making the right choice is key.

  2. Step 2

Choose the type of bottom you want to go with the suit. If you choose pants, you must decide what type of length you want and what type of pants including wide leg, fitted, long, or heel length. Length is pretty subjective these days, but your best bet is to choose a hem flattering to your body type. If you are unsure, ask for assistance in the store. If you choose a skirt, you must choose what length of skirt you want.

  3. Step 3

Try the pieces on. You should be able to reach your hands over your head and not feel any straining of the jacket. The sleeves of the jacket should reach to around the top of your hand when your hands are down at your sides or just cover the bone of your wrist.

  4. Step 4

Next take a look at the shoulders of the jacket. They should be straight. If they look strained, then the jacket is too tight. Also button the buttons at this point. You should be able to sit down comfortably without the buttons pulling.

  5. Step 5

Now that the jacket is fitted, let's take a look at the bottom part of the suit. Whether you chose a skirt or pants, you should be able to fit a finger in between the waist band and your body. If you cannot do this or if there are gaps of fabric, the fit is not right and requires alterations. There should also be no pulling on button or zipper area. If you cannot sit down comfortably, do not buy them.

  6. Step 6

Take a look at the additions on the pants such as the seams, pockets, or pleats. If seams or pleats are pulling then the bottoms are too small. This is especially noticeable with pockets. The pockets will really emphasize whatever area they are in on poor fitting pants. Try to avoid this.

  7. Step 7

Really look at yourself. Make certain that the suit is comfortable and flattering. If alterations need to be made, ask for a referral or use the store's alterations person. They have the most experience with this brand.

Tips & Warnings
  • A classic woman's suit consists of a tailored jacket with either a skirt or pants. Depending on trends today, this may or may not be different so make certain to check when buying your suit.
  • Most women have the best luck buying a suit from a store that sells separates.
  • Never under estimate the power of good accessories.
