How to Become a Beer Truck Driver

Breweries can be found all over the world. Those breweries rely on beer distributors to get their product to the consumer. The beer distributor company hires beer truck drivers to transport and deliver the product. You've seen these trucks around town and wondered what would I need to do to become a beer truck driver.

    • Sales or Customer Service Experience

    1. Become a Beer Truck Driver

      • 1

        Obtain a driver's license in your state of residence if you don't already have one. You will need to stop by your local Department of Motor Vehicle Office (DMV) and be able to prove your identity and residence. You will be asked to provide them with your social security number, take a written test about rules of the road, and a driving test. Upon successful completion of these requirements, you will then pay a fee and obtain your driver's license.

        Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A Learner's Permit. This is also done at your local DMV and requires verification of your driver's license, completion of a written test, and a fee. This learner's permit allows you to practice truck driving as long as a person with a CDL is in the passenger's seat.

        Enroll in a truck driving school. Check the yellow pages of your phone book or online for truck driving schools in your area. You will need to pay a fee to enroll, however they will teach you and give you opportunities to practice everything you will need to do to operate your truck safely and pass the driving portion of your Commercial Driver's License test.

        Take and pass the driving portion of the Commercial Driver's License test either through the Department of Motor Vehicles or a private third party if your state allows.

        Gain experience driving with your Commercial Driver's License by accepting whatever jobs you can get initally.

        Begin searching for beer truck driver/delivery jobs, as long as you are 21 years of age. Search the employment section of websites for major beer brewers and distributors and anywhere else jobs are posted online. The truck driving school you attended may also have job listings available for beer truck drivers.

    • You must also able to pass a DMV records check and receive medical clearance.

    • Make sure you are lifting weights to prepare for maneuvering up to 175 lbs. of products from the truck to the store.
