Performing a Bo Staff technique around the neck isn’t necessarily a movement of offense or defense, but more so a technique to add agility and strength to your martial arts practice. Often times this technique is used to heighten the visual appeal and style of a fight sequence, employing its movement in between strike or guard poses. As you become more and more accustom and fluid with the Bo Staff, techniques such as around the neck can be included into any sequence, connecting and flowing from one pose to the next.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bo Staff
  • Room to move
  1. Step 1

Start with the Bo Staff out in front of you, running horizontally with the floor, with your left hand just left of center.

  2. Step 2

While you’re learning to perform this technique, bend forward slightly at the hips so gravity can help with the around the neck movement.

  3. Step 3

Swing your left arm across your body, bending at the elbow until the center of the Bo Staff comes into contact with your neck.

  4. Step 4

Let the Bo Staff roll over your neck so the pole shifts from angling up left to angling down left. Since you’re body is bent slightly forward, little momentum is needed to propel the Bo Staff into the roll around the neck. Don’t worry about launching the Bo Staff around the neck, gravity will assist in this maneuver.

  5. Step 5

As the Bo Staff rolls over your neck, swing your right arm across your body, bending at the elbow until your hand is in position to catch the pole at the end of its roll.

  6. Step 6

Catch the Bo Staff as it angles down to your right hand, and then swing the pole out in front of you and away from your body, making sure your grip is firm.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you become more and more familiar with the Bo Staff, instead on bending forward for the around the neck technique, keep your body upright and send the pole to roll around the neck.
  • Make sure there is plenty of room around you when practicing any techniques with the Bo Staff.
