    • 1 cup dried brown, black, red or white beans
    • plastic or metal colander with holes
    • 4 cups water
    • 1 slow cooker with a high setting
    1. How to Cook Dried Beans in the Crock Pot

        Measure a cup of dried beans into a colander. Rinse well under running water and turn beans over with your hands to check for stones or dust.

        Put rinsed beans in crockpot.

        Cover with 4 cups of water.

        Heat on high until tender, about 3 hours, or on high for the first hour, then low overnight.

        Proceed with recipe or cover tightly in refrigerator. Beans may be stored for a day or two or frozen for up to a month.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You may double or triple the recipe, depending on the size of your crockpot. Just make sure to use four times the volume of water to beans.

    • Wait until beans are completely tender before adding spices, salt or tomatoes.
