The Bo Staff, a pole of usually polished wood approximately the same height as its owner, is typically used for certain combative or defensive movements in the martial arts. This particular movement, around the leg technique, is neither. It is more for strength and agility training as a person familiarizes himself with the Bo Staff.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bo Staff
  • Room to move
  1. Step 1

Start by holding the pole in your right hand out in front of you. The Bo Staff should be horizontal with the floor, and your hand should be positioned just left of center.

  2. Step 2

Bend forward from the hips as if taking a bow while you lift and extend your right leg back.

  3. Step 3

Sweep your right arm down, swiveling your wrist clockwise so the Bo Staff swings 180 degrees and reaches around the back of your leg.

  4. Step 4

Simultaneously, drop your left hand down and grab the Bo Staff at virtually the same location on the pole as your right hand, always maintaining contact with the pole.

  5. Step 5

As you swing the Bo Staff up and away from your left leg, drop your right leg back to the ground and stand upright.

  6. Step 6

    Move into another sequence.

Tips & Warnings
  • Start slow until you become familiar with the Bo Staff. Once you’ve become more accustomed to its weight and movements, increase your speed and incorporate the around the leg technique into a sequence of movements.
  • Make sure you have enough room to generously swing the Bo Staff around you.
