Have a pet that would like more freedom? Need a doggie door but don't know how to install one to fit your dog? Here is a step-by-step guide to installing a doggie door in your wall in a matter of a few hours.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jigsaw with two blades in case one breaks
  • Power drill with 3/8 inch drill bit
  • Phillips and slotted screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Metal file
  • Work gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Level
  • Stud finder

How to Install a Doggie door in a Wall

  1. Step 1

Locate near-by studs with a stud finder.

  2. Step 2

Tape the template of the pet door on your wall and trace the outline of it. Be sure to mark holes where you need to drill. The cut-line should be 1 1/4 inch or more above the dog's shoulders for a single flap wall mount, and 2 inches for a double wall mount.

  3. Step 3

Measure the outer-most distance between the walls. The wall must be framed out like an exterior door or window. This will create a box to install your dog door in.

  4. Step 4

Locate, cut out, and frame the dog door tunnel (as you would a door or window) that is properly sized for your new dog door. Build the frame in square and level for best results.

  5. Step 5

Dry-fit the doggie door to your cut hole.

  6. Step 6

Secure pet door in frame using door jam stock or similar material inside and out.

  7. Step 7

Screw together the four screws and caulk around the edges to form a nice weather-tight seal. Have your dog do a test run to make sure it can fit through the door comfortably.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your dog to the pet store first to make sure the door will fit its size.
  • If you have a puppy, make sure you have a larger one that it will grow into.
  • Lay out all of the tools and parts before starting, to become familiar with them.
  • Always wear safety glasses when working with power tools.
  • Do not cut into electrical wiring when installing your doggie door.
  • A minimum of 14-5/8 inches is required between studs to install a pet door.
