How to Play the Game Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire
Earth, Wind, Water and Fire is an entertaining, fast-moving game kids enjoy. It requires a knowledge of animals with the ability to think and act quickly, so it is most appropriate for players over the age of 8. Six to ten players make for a good game; for larger groups, have several circles going at once.

1
Explain to players that during the game they must make the following responses: When they hear the word “Earth” they must say the name of an animal which can walk on the earth. When they hear the word “Wind,” they must say the name of an animal that flies. When they hear the word “Water,” they must say the name of an animal that swims. When they hear the word “Fire,” they must be silent.

2
Have players stand in a circle with one player in the center. The player in the center (we’ll call her Jane for this example) holds a ball.

3
Jane places the ball in another player’s lap (Mary), shouting either Earth, Wind, Water or Fire, and then immediately starts counting to 10. Mary must say the name of an appropriate animal before Jane counts to 10. If she is successful, Mary goes to the center of the circle, and the game continues. If she does not say the name of an appropriate animal, Jane stays in the center.

When a player remains in the center for three turns, she earns a point and chooses another player to take the center position. The first player to earn 10 points is the winner.
