How to use Adobe Photoshop Effects

This article focuses on how to use effects in Adobe Photoshop. Effects in Photoshop are usually created using what are known as "filters." You will learn where to find these filters in Photoshop and how to apply these filters to your photos in order to make unusual and interesting effects.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Open a photo in Photoshop by dragging it into the program or by choosing "File." Open from the main menu.

  2. Step 2

    Choose "Filter" from the main menu. A drop-down list will appear that contains several categories of effects. The categories include Artistic, Blur, Brush Strokes, Distort, Noise, Pixelate and many others.

  3. Step 3

    Choose a category. Another sub-menu with appear with effects specific to that category.

  4. Step 4

    Select the effect you would like to use. A new window will appear providing you with settings specific to the effect you chose.

  5. Step 5

    Adjust the settings to your liking. As you adjust the settings you will see your photo change before your very eyes. Play with the settings until you come up with something you like.

  6. Step 6

    Once you are satisfied with your results click "OK." Your effect will be saved to your photo. That's all there is to it. You now know how to use effects in Adobe Photoshop.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't go overboard. Yes, it's fun to use effects, but try to be tasteful. It's all too easy to get carried away.
