Every high school has its share of traditions. Playing innocent tricks on incoming freshmen, skipping class on senior skip day, and of course going to formal dances at least twice a year. Most schools have two formal dances a year that give everyone who attends the chance to enjoy the glamour of getting dressed up and the thrill of attending an event to remember. To keep these events from being one-sided, many schools apply a girls-ask-the-guys theme to the dance held during the winter months. Nervous? Here's how to ask a guy to a winter formal.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be an early bird. No good will come of waiting too long to ask your guy to the winter formal. Your school will have the date of the winter formal chosen by the time school starts in the fall so keep the date in mind. As it gets closer, plan to ask your guy early before someone else sneaks in and beats you to it.

  2. Step 2

Do some investigating. You'll want to make sure that they guy you plan to ask is actually available. Ask around and find out if he is seeing anyone. Talk to some of his friends or better yet -- have your friends talk to his friends -- to find out where his romantic interests lie.

  3. Step 3

Build some common ground. Before you ask a guy to the winter formal, you'll need to get to know him. Put yourself in situations that will give you both the chance to become more familiar with each other. If he plays tennis, go to a match and watch him play. Does he hang out at a local burger place after school? Show up and grab a booth near his. Strike up conversation with him when the opportunity arises. Just be careful not to overdo it. There is a big difference between trying to get to know someone and stalking them.

  4. Step 4

Be honest with yourself before you work up the nerve to ask a guy to the winter formal at your school. Is he a good choice? Are you really interested in him? You'll have much more fun at the dance if you ask someone you really feel like you might have a connection with as opposed to someone you are asking simply because they belong to a group that everyone has labeled as "cool."

  5. Step 5

Target an asking date for asking your guy to the winter formal. This will give you time to mentally prepare yourself and assigning yourself a due date will help you with your nervousness.

  6. Step 6

Seek an opportunity to ask your guy when no one else is around. This will make it less awkward for you to ask and him to respond.

  7. Step 7

Be prepared for rejection. Have every confidence that your guy will say yes but realize that if he says no, it is his loss. You might be disappointed, but it is better for you to pursue someone with whom the feelings are mutual.
